Engineering the next chapter of mechanical injection
Foundations and Early Development
James founded Point85 after graduating from University of Portsmouth, initially focusing on electronics research and development, energy storage systems, and fuel and AdBlue injection technology.
James met Mike while working at Scion Sprays, where they developed an innovative fuel injection system for small engines. The system used a unique pulse-count injector and introduced a genuinely novel approach to fuel delivery. Although the technology proved technically successful, Bosch later acquired it and ultimately shelved the project after classifying it internally as a “disruptive technology”.

Developing Kugelfischer Calibration Expertise
After this, Mike founded Lucas Development to focus on Kugelfischer fuel injection systems. At the same time, James built Point85 as an independent consultancy specialising in electronics design and software development. After Scion Sprays, James and Mike met to discuss how they could modernise calibration methods for mechanical fuel injection.
During that meeting, Mike outlined a concept for an electronically driven Kugelfischer pump designed specifically for calibration and development. That discussion formed the basis of a long-term collaboration. Over the following 18 months, James designed and developed a bespoke ECU along with custom software for both the pump controller and PC interface. The system allowed engineers to calibrate engines using modern EFI-style methods, while the calibration process directly defined the geometry of the mechanical cone fitted inside the corresponding pump. This approach successfully bridged modern electronic control with traditional mechanical fuel injection.
Continuing the Work at Point85
Over more than 15 years, this work established Lucas Development as a Kugelfischer fuel injection specialist, delivering mechanical and electronic fuel injection solutions including the rebuilding, remanufacture, and calibration of Kugelfischer and Bosch MFI pumps. Throughout this period, James led electronics development, dyno support, and calibration work, before taking full responsibility for pump rebuilding and calibration.
With Mike now retiring, the work and expertise of Lucas Development continue under Point85. James now leads Point85 independently, carrying this knowledge forward to support historic and modern motorsport with the same focus on precision engineering, repeatable performance, and technical integrity.
